The 11-story UC Berkeley student housing project under construction at People’s Park will be named Judith E. Heumann House, commemorating the disability rights leader who championed accessibility and justice around the world.
A planned addition to the campus's Innovation Zone will expand lab space for the Innovative Genomics Institute and build out the largest innovation hub — Bakar Labs — at any U.S. university.
UC Berkeley’s planned Innovation Zone on the west side of campus gained significant momentum as a result of the approval today (July 17) of a new laboratory building devoted to health and agricultural applications of CRISPR gene editing and growth space for entrepreneurial startups.

Following a nationwide search, we are pleased to announce that Alicia Bihler will assume the role of Executive Director within UC Berkeley's Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S), effective July 1, 2025.
After years of planning and coordination, UC Berkeley has officially broken ground on a new parking structure designed to better support the daily needs of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Developed in partnership with Clark Pacific, the structure will provide more than 600 parking spaces—including 66 equipped for electric vehicle (EV) charging—and will play a key role in maintaining campus access while supporting the forthcoming Clean Energy Campus Utility Improvement Project.

As we approach the Fourth of July holiday, UC Berkeley is participating in a coordinated, multi-agency effort to limit access to certain roads in the Berkeley Hills. These temporary closures are intended to support public safety and reduce wildfire risk during this high-fire season.
From 5 a.m. on Friday, July 4 through 5 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, the following roads will be closed to non-essential traffic:

In early April, Michael Duncan and Mark Sarkisian of the architectural and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) toured the nearly completed Grimes Engineering Center, taking in the transformation happening around them.
As the spring semester came to a close, UC Berkeley achieved, UC Berkeley has achieved a historic sustainability milestone: earning a Platinum rating in the latest version of the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS 3.0)—becoming the first university in the world to do so.

University of California system President Michael Drake spoke to the campus community on Thursday during a Campus Conversation event.
Drake, who has led the 10-campus University of California system since August 2020, discussed an array of major topics regarding UC Berkeley and higher education, including the role of public education in California, diversity, global issues, budget concerns and his approach to leadership.
Students, faculty, staff, key benefactors and the legendary Oski the Bear came together Monday for a festive celebration of the opening of the Grimes Engineering Center, a new hub on the north side of campus. UC Berkeley Engineering marked this exciting milestone — just two years after the building’s groundbreaking — with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Chancellor Rich Lyons.
The League of American Bicyclists, the premier grassroots advocacy organization encouraging better bicycling and protecting the rights of people who bike, has honored UC Berkeley with a Gold Status Bicycle Friendly University Award in recognition of the institution’s achievements in promoting and enabling safe, accessible bicycling on campus.
