Administration: Our People

Lean Six Sigma at UC Berkeley

The Business Process Management Office (BPMO), part of the Vice Chancellor for Administration’s immediate office, coordinates Lean Six Sigma training for UC Berkeley. These programs provide staff across campus with practical tools to improve efficiency, eliminate waste, and strengthen service delivery—while also offering a valuable opportunity for professional growth.

What is Lean Six Sigma?

Lean Six Sigma combines two powerful approaches: Lean, which focuses on streamlining processes and removing unnecessary steps, and Six Sigma, which emphasizes reducing errors and improving quality. Together, they provide a proven framework for making lasting improvements in the way organizations work.

At UC Berkeley, Lean Six Sigma training is not only about improving operations—it is also about developing people. Staff who participate in these trainings gain highly transferable skills that enhance problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership. These skills benefit employees in their current roles and open doors for future career advancement.

A Path for Professional Development

The training is structured into progressive “belt” levels that guide participants as they deepen their knowledge:

  • White Belt offers an introduction to Lean Six Sigma principles.

  • Yellow Belt provides tools for analyzing and mapping processes, preparing staff to contribute to project teams.

  • Green Belt develops the ability to lead projects and apply data-driven methods to deliver measurable improvements.

  • Black Belt prepares staff to manage large, complex projects, lead cross-functional teams, and apply advanced problem-solving techniques.

By advancing through these levels, staff not only help UC Berkeley become more effective but also earn recognized professional credentials that strengthen their resumes and career prospects.

Benefits for the Administration Division and Beyond

For employees in the Administration Division, Lean Six Sigma training aligns directly with our mission of delivering high-quality services that enable the university to thrive. Staff who complete training bring new energy and expertise back to their departments, leading efforts to simplify processes, reduce costs, and improve outcomes for the campus community.

Equally important, Lean Six Sigma fosters a mindset of continuous improvement and professional excellence. Employees gain the confidence to identify opportunities, propose solutions, and drive change. These are career-building skills that support long-term success both within the Administration Division and across the university.

Lean Six Sigma training is open to UC Berkeley staff, faculty, and students, with opportunities for every experience level.
