Administration: Our Priorities

Campus and Community Safety

UC Berkeley is deeply committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment where students, faculty, and staff can thrive. The university continually explores new approaches to public safety that reflect the needs and values of its community, ensuring that academic goals can be pursued in a secure setting.

The UC Berkeley Police Department (UCPD) plays a central role in advancing campus and community safety, working closely with fellow departments within the Administration Division—including Facilities Services, Berkeley IT, Environmental Health & Safety (through the Office of Emergency Management), and Parking & Transportation. UCPD also collaborates with other campus units such as the Division of Student Affairs, the Office for Prevention of Harassment & Discrimination, and the Office of Ethics, Risk, and Compliance Services. Together, these partnerships ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach to safety across the university.

UCPD also collaborates with the City of Berkeley Police Department and neighboring law enforcement agencies to strengthen safety in the surrounding community through a coordinated approach.

Campus and community safety at UC Berkeley is not defined by a single project but by an ongoing commitment that requires shared responsibility and engagement. By bringing together diverse perspectives and ideas, the university strives to create solutions that reflect its values of inclusivity and collaboration.
