The following message was sent to all UC Berkeley students, staff, and faculty.
Dear Campus Community,
We are pleased to share that Nathan Jandl will join UC Berkeley as the new Director of Sustainability and Carbon Solutions, effective May 1, 2025. Nathan brings a proven commitment to advancing climate action, stakeholder engagement, environmental justice, and campus sustainability. His leadership will support UC Berkeley's ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, modernize campus energy systems, and integrate sustainability more deeply into university operations and planning.
Nathan joins us from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he most recently served as Associate Director of Sustainability. In that role, he was instrumental in creating a campus-wide sustainability strategy and collaborated closely with faculty, students, and operational teams to embed sustainability principles into decision-making. His work emphasized not only reducing carbon emissions, but also increasing climate resilience, supporting student-led initiatives, and expanding the reach of sustainability programs across the campus community.
Nathan Jandl, Director of Sustainability and Carbon Solutions
In addition to his administrative experience, Nathan holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where his research focused on the environmental humanities. He brings to his work an interdisciplinary perspective that connects climate action with culture, communication, and public engagement. Prior to entering the field of sustainability, he worked as a writer, editor, and educator, skills that continue to inform his approach to leadership and change-making.
At UC Berkeley, Nathan will oversee the Office of Sustainability and Carbon Solutions, which plays a central role in implementing the university's climate commitments. The office is responsible for advancing sustainability goals in alignment with the University of California's system-wide policies, including achieving carbon neutrality, improving energy efficiency, and promoting sustainable practices across all areas of campus life. It collaborates with campus departments to develop strategies for reducing emissions, tracks and reports progress on key metrics, and helps plan for a resilient and low-carbon future.
The Office of Sustainability and Carbon Solutions is also a core partner in the Clean Energy Campus initiative, a multi-year effort to transition the UC Berkeley campus away from fossil fuels by developing a new, all-electric heating and cooling system and modernizing the university's energy infrastructure. In addition, the office supports climate justice efforts and works to ensure that Berkeley's sustainability initiatives reflect the values of equity, inclusion, and public service.
Please join us in welcoming Nathan Jandl to UC Berkeley. We are excited for the knowledge, creativity, and collaborative spirit he brings to this important work, and we look forward to the leadership he will provide in helping the campus meet its climate goals and model sustainable solutions for the broader community.
Sincerely,
Marc Fisher
