Temporary Road Closures for Fire Safety, July 4 - July 5

June 26, 2025

The following CalMessage was sent to all students, staff, and faculty on June 26, 2025.

Dear campus community,

As we approach the Fourth of July holiday, UC Berkeley is participating in a coordinated, multi-agency effort to limit access to certain roads in the Berkeley Hills. These temporary closures are intended to support public safety and reduce wildfire risk during this high-fire season.

From 5 a.m. on Friday, July 4 through 5 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, the following roads will be closed to non-essential traffic:

  • Centennial Drive, between Stadium Rim Way and Grizzly Peak Boulevard
  • Grizzly Peak Boulevard, from Centennial Drive/Golf Course Road to Claremont Avenue/Fish Ranch Road

All roads will reopen at 5 a.m. on Saturday, July 5. These areas have historically drawn large crowds seeking views of the Bay Area skyline, resulting in overcrowding, illegal parking, and delays for emergency responders.

During the closure, access will be limited to emergency vehicles and authorized university personnel. Local residents will be asked to show proof of residency on Grizzly Peak, or the immediate area, to proceed through restricted areas.

UCPD will increase patrols in and around campus to support a safe holiday. To report unsafe or illegal activity, please contact:

  • UCPD (UC Police Department): (510) 642-6760
  • Oakland Police Department: (510) 777-3333
  • For emergencies, always dial 9-1-1

Thank you for helping us keep our community safe. We wish you a safe and enjoyable Independence Day.

Sincerely,

Marc Fisher
