Today, Marc Fisher officially announced Courtney Chandler as the new Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff. Here is the announcement sent to faculty & staff:
Dear Campus Colleagues,
It is with great excitement that I announce after a lengthy search process, Courtney Chandler has been selected to serve as Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff for the Administration Division at UC Berkeley. For the past seven and a half years, Courtney has served as the Senior Vice Dean (previously Senior Assistant Dean) and Chief Strategy and Operating Officer (CSO/COO) at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. She will begin her new role with us on October 21, 2024.
Courtney’s deep administrative and academic program management experience, coupled with her leadership roles at a top business school, equips her with distinctive skills to serve as my Chief of Staff and be a pivotal member of my executive leadership team.
A proud Bear, Courtney earned her BA in Economics at Berkeley, a Masters of Business Administration at Haas as well as her Doctorate in Higher Education management from the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education. In keeping with Berkeley’s rich history of the faculty and administration’s shared responsibility in the management of the university, Courtney focused her doctoral research on the intersection of shared governance and organizational culture in higher education.
In her more than 14 years in higher education, Courtney’s career has expanded to roles of greater responsibilities and larger portfolios. As COO at Haas, she oversees six (6) offices spanning academic and staff human resources, IT, digital learning, facilities, marketing, corporate partnerships, and MBA career management. As CSO, Courtney leads Haas’ strategic efforts and initiatives that reflect the school’s commitment to reputational strength, principled business education, an elevated student experience, and financial health and performance, all of which have led to significant outcomes for the school. Courtney’s administrative leadership style, with a focus on delivering top-quality experiences for faculty, students, and staff will help us to support the diverse portfolio of initiatives within the Administrative Division.
At Berkeley, Courtney has prioritized and fostered close cross-campus collaborations having served on various campus committees and task forces such as finance reform, COVID-19 Recovery Operations, and being actively involved in establishing the campus IT governance structure. She was recently appointed as the Special Advisor to the Provost on Academic Labor Relations Coordination to lead the development of a governance structure and coordinate the operational response to the UAW academic labor union contract. She is consistently recognized for her transparent communication, strong problem-solving abilities, consensus building, and professional integrity, all of which have greatly contributed to Courtney’s past successes. She is also a recipient of the UC Berkeley Excellence in Management Award in 2016 and in 2021.
Please join me in welcoming Courtney to her new role in the Administration Division. I want to also extend my thanks to the members of the search committee for their hard work and dedication in filling this critical role. I am excited to begin working with Courtney in our efforts to continuously improve the campus community, resource stewardship, and organizational effectiveness in support of the Berkeley mission.
Regards,
Marc
