Alicia Bihler leads the Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S), the campus unit responsible for ensuring a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace for UC Berkeley’s students, faculty, staff, and visitors. EH&S supports laboratory and research safety, hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, radiation and biosafety oversight, occupational health, and emergency response preparedness. The office provides specialized training, consultation, and risk assessments across hundreds of campus facilities and research programs.
Alicia brings over 20 years of experience in environmental health and safety, with deep expertise in regulatory compliance, hazardous waste management, and research safety protocols. She has served in multiple leadership roles at Berkeley, including as Deputy Director of EH&S, and was appointed Interim Director in 2023, and Executive Director in 2025. Alicia has played a critical role in the development and implementation of campuswide emergency response protocols, as well as in advancing EH&S’s outreach and education efforts. Her leadership supports both day-to-day safety operations and long-term planning to ensure that the university remains compliant, resilient, and prepared for evolving regulatory and public health challenges.
