Ella Callow named new ADA/Section 504 Compliance Officer

October 4, 2018

Ella Callow will be joining UC Berkeley as its ADA/Section 504 Compliance Officer this October. The position of ADA/Section 504 Compliance Officer evinces UC Berkeley’s commitment to ensuring an inclusive and equitable campus in regards to disability. A faculty/staff search committee conducted a nationwide search for candidates and was thrilled to find a truly stellar candidate.

Ella will join the Vice Chancellor, Administration office and administer all aspects of campus-wide compliance with federal and state disability laws, as well as University policies and procedures pertaining to protections for people with disabilities. Access and inclusion are core Berkeley values, and having someone with Ella’s depth of experience will enable us to fulfill our vision.

Ella brings more than ten years experience in enforcing disability compliance in government systems, both as the Legal Director for the National Center for Parents with Disabilities & their Families, Through the Looking Glass, and as a litigation consultant for the Disability Rights Section of the Civil Rights Division in the U.S. Department of Justice. In her current role, Ella serves as the Disability Services Specialist for the City of Berkeley, where she develops disability-related policies, practices, and procedures. In her first year, Ella successfully navigated the city through a state compliance audit and conducted global internal auditing and training of the entire city homeless shelter system.

Ella is an alumna of UC Berkeley, having received her BA in Native American Studies and Social Welfare, with high honors, and her J.D. from Berkeley Law.
